5 Tips To Make Reading Fun For Preschoolers

preschool reading For some children, reading is like doing jumping jacks, in the mud whilst juggling. It’s very hard and not much fun. So it’s our job to make reading as fun and interesting as possible to really help them to learn and enjoy.

With Vinny being at preschool he has really started to enjoy reading and actually wants to help read his books himself. Although he can’t quite read yet he does a great job at acting out the stories by looking through the pictures and he actually memorises a lot of the stories too because we must read them to him about a thousand times…. Time to switch things up and make things fun, here are 5 tips to help you make reading fun for your preschooler.

Instead of going for a traditional book, why not try something a little more digital. Try an audio book or read along on a device like an iPad. We really love to use the DisneyLife app when choosing a story for Vinny.

There are a bunch of different ways to read, there are a range of picture, read-along audio books and junior novels. I love that there are a range of different stages for all reading abilities and you can also read or listen to the stories in up to five languages – English, French, German, Spanish also Italian! I really love this feature because I’m half Italian and I grew up learning both English and Italian so it’s really nice for Vinny to hear other languages too and learn through story time. Using DisneyLife you can read either at home or on the move which is ideal for holidays, sleepovers at grandparents and in the car.

Technology can make reading way more enticing, and your children will not only build up their vocabulary but will build up their background knowledge about topics and of course their favourite Disney characters.

I find when we let Vinny choose what he wants to read, he is way more excited. This may mean you end up reading the same book for about a week in our case it’s Toy Story 3 The Great Toy Escape, but at least your little one is going to be excited and really enjoy it.  Vinnys favourite character is Woody from Toy Story, Woody leads him through the stories making it so much more fun. To be honest, there is so much choice on the DisneyLife app I don’t think you will be reading the same book for a week however if that happens just know it’s going to be way more fun via the app!

We have created a magical space in Vinnys room where we can all sit together comfortably and read books. This area is Vinnys ‘hang out’ space and he loves it. We have made it super comfortable by adding lots of soft seating, snuggly throws and squishy cushions oh and of course we can’t forget all of the cuddly toys! We love reading to them, and they love to listen.

As I mentioned with the DisneyLife app there are a bunch of audio books you can listen to. So get comfy in the reading corner, grab your favourite snacks and have a chilled reading session. The audio books make it so easy to find something to read all you need to do is; tap the books icon at the bottom of the screen, and tap the one you want to read. You then just wait for the book to be downloaded, tap the play button and swipe left and right to turn the page. It’s as easy as that! Books are clearly labelled and segmented to make finding your childs favourite Disney character super easy.

[df_divider_text title=”Tip 5 | Break The Rules” title_align=”separator_align_center” el_width=”100″ style=”solid” accent_color=”#EEEEEE” padding=”20px 0″ position=”align_center” el_class=”” border_t_width=”2px”]

We all love routine right? But sometimes rules and routines are made to be broken! Stay up a little later (30 mins…) make a yummy hot chocolate with marshmallows, then read and enjoy. If your little one wants to jump on the bed and act out the story then let him, it’s all about having fun and getting creative. DisneyLife is a source of entertainment but it can also stimulate the mind and inspire creativity so just go with the flow and enjoy, read in a funny voice, jump around and have a giggle.
